Hebrews
JESUS, OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST
13 Lessons by Pearl Hamilton
Therefore….let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Hebrews 12:1
The theme of the Book of Hebrews is the pre-eminence of our Lord Jesus Christ. It was written for Jewish people who had embraced Jesus as their promised Messiah and were being persecuted for their newfound faith. God graciously moved an unknown writer to encourage them to lay aside their doubts and fears and remain faithful, hold fast to Christ, and move on to maturity. Why? Because Jesus Christ is the best! He is superior to everything good that came before. He excels all the most excellent facets of Judaism. He is more excellent than the prophets, the angels, and Moses. He is a better High Priest; He brought a better hope and a better covenant with better promises. He is a High Priest who can sympathize with our weakness because “In Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,” (Colossians 2:9) and He humbled Himself and became a man and lived among us. “Therefore” the warning is given, “let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken and let us thus offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe” (Hebrews 12:28).
